My Niece is turning 15 an is an avid horse-woman. I used a beautiful Asian Horse design from Susa Glenn Designs. The fabric is from eQuilter featuring ancient Samurai, swords and Asian symbols. To complete the Skrappysak I used a design from Red Moon Garden an Asian symbol for Horse! I like creating with machine embroidery and personalizing gifts.

Natural Disasters!

I am so honored to join many artists that have shared their talent and art expressions with the many people throughout the world that have been touched by this past year's natural disasters.

Birmingham, Alabama was touched by a tornado in late April. I have two long-time friends that live close to this city. Fortunately, they were not injured by this horrendous storm.

Last week a tornado touched down in Springfield, Massachusetts. My Niece lives on a street that was destroyed. Fortunately, Her family survived without physical injuries. Their home received some destruction, but they are doing fine.

Early Spring, earthquakes brought devastation to two other areas of the world.

Early morning of February 22 in New Zealand an earthquake struck an area known as Christchurch. The earthquake caused widespread damage across Christchurch, especially in the central city and eastern suburbs, with damage exacerbated by buildings and infrastructure already being weakened by the 4 September earthquake and its aftershocks.

The evening of March 11, my husband and I watched with much anguish as the tsunami devastated the coast of Japan. How horrifying to watch in real time the destruction of peoples' lives.The earthquake and tsunami have caused extensive and severe damage in Northeastern Japan, leaving thousands of people confirmed dead, injured or missing, and millions more affected by lack of electricity, water and transportation.

As an artist, I realized there was something more personal I could do. Artists' groups began forming caring circles. The quality and quantity of the art projects that developed has been so impressive. Sophisticated projects included beautifully constructed quilts. I discovered hundreds of hand-made quilts created and shipped to those that had lost everything. Other projects included comfort dolls, prayer pillows, angel projects, and other art forms for sharing. Large packages of art items have been shipped to many.

I am so impressed by the work of so many. I contribute handmade cards, angels, hearts, and I-Love-You magnets. What a great feeling to imagine a small art expression held tenderly in the hand of a stranger in New Zealand, Japan, Birmingham, or in Springfield...isn't that what art is all about....

These are from my friends at Stitching Fingers. Marja created the first one of personally dyed wool and wet-felted. She is from the Netherlands.The red fibered art piece filled with lots of beads is from Sharon of England. Mary Lou from Ontario made the beautiful lace and floral design. Awesome stitch-work with lovely beads. The beautiful mountains is from Mt Bambier, Australia. Shazz made this gorgeous scenery postcard. I also received some great Easter fabric Postcards. Thank you for sharing these beautiful and creative works of great friends.

This has been a wonderful month of sharing with my fellow artists.
I received this beautiful fabric piece from Karen K. of Embroidery Swaps. It was a trade for Pincushions! How creative to make not only a gorgeous teacup and saucer pincushion, but she included 14 spools of Sulky thread in border pockets! The second photo shows the beautiful "flower" that is formed with the removal of the threads! A very generous creation of both talent and time!!! I will treasure it!

Georgianne also created a fun Pincushion! When the Swap was posted, I asked if we could request a particular design...No. I visited my local Quilt Shop and requested a class on making Cupcake Pincushions....well, we know how what we wish for often comes true....I was so delighted to receive a Cupcake Pincushion so nicely created!

The lavendar filled sachets are Birthday Circles. The back includes a poem for each month. They were created for members of Art4Mail Group. Nicki's lace adds a beautiful finishing touch.

The mini-wall hangings to the left are Quote Swaps in the Emprodery Swap Group. I like this statement so much and often incorporate it in my work. Again, Nicki's lace pieces really make the statement!

After I saw the beautiful composition of Linda's Wall Hanging, I had to utilize the embroidery pattern in my Wall Hangings. I created the first one in response to a Horse Theme Swap in Embroidery Swap Group. I foolishly used an original photo of my Aunt Marge, 1935 on her horse in Walden, New York...I could not send it off.

So, I created the below Horse-Theme Wall Hanging...Tammy was thrilled since this is the theme in her den...how things evolve! We are both happy. The "Shoebox Faces" is a Huskey Designs http://www.huskeyembroiderydesign.com/

Art Received for my Birthday

It has been a few weeks since I posted. I want to share a gorgeous wall hanging I received as a Birthday Gift from my dear friend Lynda. She machine embroidered the Victorian frame and presented a very detailed image of a small child under a vintage optical lens. This picture contains gold flecks and brightly colored yarn. This offers a very subtle textured design.

The entire art piece is made with a glossy patterned fabric and look at the row of feathered flowers. They richly pick-up the colors and complete this great presentation! Thank you dear Linda...A Real Treasure!

November 2010 Calender

Isn't this great! Barbara S. created this neat turkey for November 2010...In a Yahoo Group, ArtGirls, 12 artist are creating a "Paper Doll" Calendar for each month. I now have May and November...I am eager to see the entire 2010 Calender!

Each tail feather was water colored with the brilliant hues. All six are movable as are the turkey's feet....so much fun!

I will treasure this November Charm...I can easily replace 2010 as the years go on....

Dawn has sent me another beautiful Christmas Crazy Quilt. We were matched for the trade in Art4Mail Yahoo Group. The Gingerbread Crazy Quilt swap was a -one-on-one. I like that she always personalizes the squares! Again, she has shown her embroidery talent with special and detailed stitches. What a beautiful Christmas gift....

I received another Christmas Crazy Quilt from Rita in the same Yahoo Group. Look how the two match so well! Rita included a gingerbread too and created beautiful embroidery stitches. I so like the ribbon embroidery around a vintage Christmas photo.

They complement each other so well.

The selected fabrics, similar design, and the great quality stitching in both offer an opportunity to create a treasured Christmas wall-hanging!

I want to share the awesome package I received this morning from my Secret Pal from the Embroidery Swap Group I belong to...The photo does not do justice to the beautiful vintage lace, crazy quilt design place mats I received...Four pieces with such detail, design, and a delicate selection of lace pieces. They are a treasure. She also included three additional lace packages and a 100 year old thimble for my collection! I also received over a yard of Christmas fabric, four FQ of my favorite colors, six spools of thread, thread pullers, and a velvet pouch with a magnifying glass...much needed tools of the trade! She was so very generous...I am thrilled and filled with appreciation.

Yongosona Wuuti - The Storyteller

Now that I have established my breathing and dried my tears, I want to share with you the extraordinary Blume Doll Barbara M., special Yahoo Group Art4Mail, created. I am so honored to receive this caringly made and researched doll. Her name is Yongosona Wuuti. In Hopi language this means Tortoise/Turtle Woman! Barbara conducted extensive research in naming her. "In the Hopi Culture, the women were responsible for all things domestic. They were nomadic and followed the quest to futile soils. They carried their belongings (houses) with them much like a tortoise, hence her name."

The first Stoyteller was made by a contemporary Pueblo woman in New Mexico, honoring her grandfather who was a storyteller. Storytellers dolls are always depicted with open mouths because they would sing their history. They would also keep their eyes closed. Turtle Woman is a real treasure.

What Barbara did not know is my Niece is a Navajo Indian from the Alamo Reservation, Alamo, New Mexico. Her daughter won the Miss Teen Alamo Navajo 2006-2007 title.

Art4Mail conducted this Ethnic Doll Trade. It is so special that Turtle Woman came to me and our family.

Is it the color of Nature? Of Joy? Is it Feminine? A Mystery!

How interesting to delve into the origins, movements, interpretations, and emotions of this human behaviour called Dance! Gena offered an to express a personal reaction to the narration in the Zine.

Big Horn Sheep!

The heard of sheep was grazing off our bedroom balcony!

What a beautiful experience watching them climbing the hill...The older males leading and occasionally butting horns...so neat.

The neighborhood enjoys the sheep everyday in the park near our home. It is sweet watching the heard and the children on the swings, slides, and picnicking all around them.(Photos posted on an earlier date-do scroll down!)

We were fortunate to watch them return in the evening to the mountain near our home. Over 50 big horn sheep crossing the street, stopping and grazing, then continuing up the stone and dirt terrain.

Summer Sandal's - Bookmark

Summertime-Sand, Shells, Sun, and SANDALS....

These are Bookmarks-they are fun to construct. This year's fabrics offered a perfect sandal print. I also used a postcard with lots of purple pansy's.

The back of the sandal-bookmark has a pocket to insert a summer punch recipe and a small paper umbrella.

Each one is always a bit unique. They are well received as hostess gifts, RAKs, and party favors. I included, in the picture, the back of a bookmark...you can see the blue umbrella.

Chain of Hearts

"A Cup of Tea" offers hand embroidery with a quote, "Each cup of Tea Represents an Imaginary Voyage" -C. Douzel. Two vintage fabrics with teacups are complimented with a contemporary rose print. A vintage pressed scalloped button and a charming old photo-transparency of a lady sitting on the edge of the tea cup. It measures 6 x 6.

"Blooming"

This Heart is machine embroidered with a decorative stitch around the parameter. The focal point is this awesome photo of a deco woman draped in tulips..this is created with dual transparencies. A lacy pink bow and a vintage tiny green button complete this very uniquely created heart.

"Love Lyrics" is the title of the book the beautiful reclined woman reads. The quote, "Tea and Books...Hmmm, Two of Life's Exquisite Pleasures That Bring Near-Bliss." The background fabric is a decorative tea-theme from Australia. The composition is complete with a clear faceted button. Hand embroidery is done on the pieces with a machine design around the edges. This heart measures 6 x 6. "People" This next Heart uses two interesting fabrics. "Step by Step" by Alexander Henry. This simple, yet complex graphic style offers illusionary steps brought to life with silhouettes . "In Crowd" is another fabric design by Alexander Henry. A retro print of 50's 60's faces. This is an 2006 out-of-print design. The large vintage button (almost 2 inches) complete this Heart.

Mini Vintage Wall Hanging

Dear Gena received her birthday gift...I can post it..I had such fun creating this little piece of art. A 12 x 12 mini wall hanging with a friendship theme. I used angelina fibers and fun buttons (Thank you Linda!) The photo was in my Secret Pal's package I received last month.

I also made another mini quilt for my child hood friend in New York: the quote reads, "Friendship is the knot tied by angel's hands." Lots of vintage buttons!

Chain of Hearts

Two more hearts for Trade:

This very contemporary heart is made with fabric named "Step by Step." The designer of this graphic print is Alexander Henry. The entire pattern is stairways to nowhere and tiny images of silhouetted people measuring between 3/4" to 1". The quote of an unknown author reads, "All things are in Process, Rising and Returning." The two vintage typewriter keys read "Shift Freedom," rectangular, and "Shift Key" circular. I always attempt to incorporate a vintage touch to my art work. I thought both of these keys were neat with the design. This black and white heart is backed with a soft, white fabric and measures 5.25 x 5.00. A very unique heart that will inspire conversation!

This heart is named "50's Soda Fountain." I can still remember when I tasted my first milk shake...it was strawberry and Elvis was playing on the jukebox, "Don't Be Cruel."

My camera does not show how beautiful this image stitched out. I orignally had another art project for this, but it becam a heart! I outlined the heart's edge with a scalloped machine stitch and added a tiny length of yellow lace. This heart measures 6 x 6 and is backed with a soft, white fabric.
I am ready to TRADE!

These were so much fun to embroider! The set is traveling to Adrianna, a little girl that was recently quite ill. Her name was posted on a Yahoo Group for prayers. I decided to make her this set of fabric paperdolls.

Boulder City and The Big Horn Sheep

This was taken 6 a.m. the sun is rising! Our view of Lake Mead from our deck....it is beautiful. The next picture is from our side patio. The mountains actually change color throughout the day. Don and I went to breakfast this morning and....the Big Horn Sheep have come down from the mountain! They will be grazing on the green grass and drinking water from the pails people provide. They grazed all day in the park located at the bottom of the road near our house. You can see Lake Mead in the background. There are two large gazebos with picnic tables, a children's' playground, a tennis court, basketball court, and a horse shoe pit.

This is a "Tea Time" package I made for a friend. We are communicating through art with a monthly exchange. Imagine what this package signifies. I am sure it will reflect a common theme, but individual reactions will depend on many personal emotions, experiences, and energies. What do you see?

I enjoy the machine embroidery design of a comfortable chair with a steaming cup of tea. There is a small metal chair with a sign, "A cup of tea is the beginning an imaginary voyage."A fabric bookmark with a tea design is included as well as a page of quotes about tea. The tiny silver-plated spoon has small pink swarovski crystal in the spoon's bowl. A real FUN project....what am I communicating?

Aunt Rose

I so enjoyed embroidering this "Fishing Bird Tree" for my Aunt Rose in Florida...Even though she visits often, I miss her! She has always enjoyed a trip to the lake and catch a few...she knows how to clean, fillet, and cook them too!

Now that My breathing has settled down, I can exclaim my joy in receiving this awesome package. Thank you is not enough to express my excitement!!! Just look at the beautiful vintage ephemera; notice the gorgeaous art deco woman with the fox stole...to die for! There are many art deco pieces as well as great old photos. The package also included a book, COLLAGE LOST AND FOUND, which has all sorts of creative ideas. My dearest secret pal also included personal vintage papers as clues to her identity. What absolute fun! Did I tell you I also received a Gift Certificate to a great embroidery design web site....HEY! Do I have two "Pals???" Mighty generous and so well assembled. She went on Ebay to find some of the treasures. Can you tell I am awed My Secret Pal is the B_E_S_T!!! This is a three month Swap in the Goggle Group Embroidery Swap!

Birthday Flowers and My Daily Gift!

Don brought this beautiful bouquet home for my birthday. As you can see our dear cat, Pfizer, is sharing in their beauty.

I had to keep them in our guest bathroom with the door closed...Pfizer jumped on every surface to continue his "treat."

I also received an new embroidery machine...it is so much faster. How nice to embroider larger designs!

The Seamstress - An Historical Novel

I just completed this indulging book. Although it is fiction the authorFrances de Pontes Peebles , incorporated many historical facts. I enjoyed the references to sewing. I highly recommend it.

Chain of Hearts

"A Sip of Tea" ( SWAPED)

This is the first heart I made to trade in the Chain of Hearts Yahoo Group. It is 7 inches wide and 6 inches tall. The heart is accented with a beautiful tea theme design, a quote, " One sip of tea will bathe the drooping spirits in delight beyond bliss of dreams" - Milton. There are four lavender button accents and a smokey lavender vintage button with a curved pattern. I included a lovely transparency of a woman sipping tea. There is a 1.5 cut on the right edge. This does not interfer with the beauty of this heart.

"Pensive Woman" (SWAPED)

This is the next heart I created. The base of this design was material from a dear friend in Australia. The print corresponded with this image of a pensive woman. I accented this heart with vintage lace and a large decorative black button 2 inches in circumference. The art piece is 6 x 6 inches.

From the early 1900's to the modern-the women's' images are the focal point of this heart. The background is a crazy quilt piece including parts of time, (Robert Kaufman)and black dots. The center shows an actual watch face (Marcus Brothers)with a vintage time-hand and a broken piece of red glass for accent. The heart measures 6 x 5.75 inches. This heart has a soft fiber background.

"Elegant Cowgirl" The Australia fabric print was the background for this beautiful heart. I layered fabric designs from a nice pastel print. I added lace and a 1 inch vintage button for accent. This heart measures 6 x 6.

"Sweet Scent"
I clipped a set of French style crystal perfume bottles from this fabric by Woodrow Studios of London entitled, "Art Deco Style Perfume Crystal Bottles" Sadly this company is no longer in business. I accented with a sheet of metallic weave. A vintage image of an advertisement for cologne was sealed in a perfume bottle tag. Captured is a child holding a bottle for the woman to inhale. A dyed piece of lace and three buttons complete this neat 6 x 6 heart. A gold gilded vintage button complements the gold accents.

I started to think about the impact of the current economic environment on families in the United States. I discovered there is an increase in domestic violence with concern about an increase of child abuse. There is also a concern about economic abuse on the family.

MOVING!

We are moving again! It was a year ago we moved into our lovely home overlooking Lake Mead. We have discovered another gem with the same gorgeous view of the Lake . It offers larger rooms and a garage for our RV. BUT! The RV does not fit with the satellite dome! This garage will offer Don his workshop. There is also a wonderful area for my art studio.

This is our dear cat, Phizer, (I retired from the Pharmaceutical Company) occupying every space we create! He is also in and out of the boxes! We will finish our move the end of March. So, I will limit my envolvement in my Groups...Only for a few weeks until we unpack and get some organization.

Darfur: A Survivor

03/11/09 - "Darfur about to get a lot worse - if we allow it "(Nicholas Kristof, columnist for The New York Times.) Sudan has made a decision to expel aid groups that are a lifeline keeping more than a million people alive in Darfur.

Health clinics have already closed, and diarrhea is spreading in camps and meningitis. These camps are huge, 90,000 people and disease can spread rapidly. Children will be the first to die. The first crisis will be disease and water shortage, particularly in West Darfur.

President, Omar al-Bahir has been indited for war crimes and genocide throughout Sudan.The thought is this decision to remove the aid groups is a retaliation.

I just completed an informative and powerful book, Tears of the Desert, written with Damien Lewis. As a black African tribe, Zaghawa, inhabited the Southern Darfur region in Sudan. She was the first from her village to go to the university and to qualify as a medical doctor.

Her experiences are a testimony of the war crimes including the use of rape as a weapon of war.

Charming Gift!

Amber D. recently offered a new year's surprise through the International Artistic Charms Yahoo Group which she moderates. The challenge was to create a glitzy charm and post a photo on the web site.

I love creating charms. I made an art piece I called Evolution. The watch piece, the shark's tooth, a shell, and the face to represent, "We should never have left the ocean!" (I am not an evolutionist in faith.)

Amber placed the names of everyone that participated in the contest. She drew my name!!!

I received three gift bags full to the brim with glass beads, flatback rhinestones, and Swarovski stones. I also received a wonderful charm created by Amber. It was a delight!

I am embroidering valentine hearts filled with fresh lavendar for friends and family. I am selling a few at a craft show too. This photo displays my hearts, AND notice the nice size flat-back rhineston on each one. Thank you Amber.

SNOW IN THE DESERT!

Yesterday was our FUN DAY! My dear husband, Don, and I traveled to the Mall to walk around and see all the beautiful decoration, Santa and the little ones, the shoppers, and buy some extras. We left Boulder City at 11a.m. We had lunch at the Mall and started to drive home when we heard the "pass" to Boulder City was closed because of the snow.

We decided to go to the movies and wait...we imagined everything would be clear by 5 pm...we made three attempts to get through the pass. The last try was at 11pm. The lines of traffic and so many trucks, three lanes bumper to bumper! We are a desert and do not have the equipment to clear the snow! The hotels filled up quickly. We stayed with Don's Sister in Henderson. This mornings weather report stated there were 8 inches of snow in Henderson. Boulder City had 4 inches.

Our Fun Day really offered a challenging experience. It was so beautiful and unbelievable. The snow on the mountains was so beautiful. There were children in a park sleigh-riding! Heavy jackets, mittens, and snow boots are not common attire for kids here! . The red sleds brought back memories of my own and the neighborhood children sleigh-riding many years ago. It was so lovely to see every one's reaction to the snow.

The night away from home did not stop me from enjoying lunch with friends today.

It was so enjoyable to relax and enjoy the company.

Our Trip to the East Coast

OUR Anne! Seven years ago I met Anne at the Albuquerque Airport. I was flying to Millbrook, and Anne was returning home near Buffalo. She had visited her son's family in New Mexico. I have embraced for many years the quote, "An Unexpected Encounter May Connect One More Firmly to the Meaning of Life."

Anne and I maintained our friendship through the years. Don and I visited Anne on our trip back to New York. Don, finally got to meet Anne after all our letters (yes, she sends me pages of handwritten letters!) and our weekly telephone calls. Anne is 79 and lives alone in a small home with a wonderful organic garden. Through the years she has sent us freshly grown garlic, canned tomatoes, and even a frozen box with dry ice of delicious home-made porgies! I so enjoy her receipes and suggestions when I tell her what I am cooking for dinner! Imagine the love she has to share. We were so blessed to have enjoyed few days with her. We visited the Butterfly Museum in Canada and Niagara Falls.

Butterflies enjoy fresh fruit! There were thousands of different butterflies flying about. It was magical.

Anne enjoyed all the beautiful flowers...Don did not realize Anne got behind him to make sure we noticed the flowers!

This "Unexpected Encounter" has offered Don and I a treasure of memories.

Amulet Bag

This lovely Amulet Bag arrived from Carol! I am so eager to fill it with special treasures. I am so impressed with her creative construction. I have not seen such a vintage piece of needle work in years! It is 4 inches of delight! The butterfly was selected for my totem animal..."It is said that what the caterpillar calls the end, God calls the butterfly." The photo does not catch the vibrant colors in the fabric. There is also beautiful bead work around the bottom. A wonderful gift from my special friend in the mountains of North Carolina. Anniversary Fun!

Dinner was delicious...we avoided beef, we attempted to eat only fresh vegetables, we have cut-back on carbohydrates, we do not not drink alcohol... no desert....we still had a great time. Don's twin sister, Daun, made the loaf of bread for our wedding reception....We broke blessed bread with our family and friends. 32 years ago!

ART IN A CARTON

I am so thrilled to have been selected as a partner for this wonderful art project. I have received four "Art in a Carton"with wonderful gifts in each. My Art in a Cartons were from Susan L. of Germany (the initiator of this great project!), Lubna U. of Essex, Jill S. of England, and Shakti G. of Spain. Imagine the excitement of discovering a beautifully altered container with artistic objects included. It has been joyous!

I have assembled my cartoons to prepare for the exchange. I have completed some neat art objects to include. I will post them when they are completed this week.

The photo captures two of the Art Cartons I received and a variety of the neat art objects. An eight-drawer dresser with delights in each one! A nicely formed hand with marvelous colors to hold a small incense cone or, or, or! Two hand-made booklets, and a Sun-Goddess flat doll. Imagine, an opportunity to exchange art pieces from friends all over the WORLD in an altered milk container!

Amulet Bag

Recently, I was involved in a Trade in the Yahoo Group 14-Secrets to a Happy Artist's Life. The swap was an amulet bag made with the partner's values, ideals, and preceived needs. I so procrastinated...I have been so overwhelmed with unpacking boxes since our move. Well, one day I just started the process after carefully reading some of Carol's poems, her notes about the swap, and meditating. I got so involved in the process! The bag was completed in a few hours. I infused so much caring attention to this art piece. I knew it was right for Carol. I realize how much I cared for Carol and was honored to have this opportunity to create something especially for her. I am so surprised at the beautiful results. I included some fabric-plus inches with specific images for her. My son, Henry, composed the poem to accompany the bag.

NATURE
Being in nature is a wonderful place to be,
It's as if you have opened a gate to a secret garden with
a very special key.
Wonderful sights of butterflies and bumble bees all abound,
looking near and far you see them flying all around.
As you look to the sky your eyes catch a bird in flight
with the sun shining a warm and radiant light.
Sitting down you spot a bright colorful flower,
beauty that you can stare at for a few minutes or an hour.
It is wondrous all that we see with our eyes whether it be pretty or in a tangle .

Alyssa's Birthday

My beautiful Granddaughter will be10 this week. I made bookmarks in the shape of sandals for her party. The sandals have a pocket on the back where I inserted a paper umbrella and birthday wishes...adult recipients receive a summer beverage recipe...Fun. I originally received a fabric bookmark in a trade on the Fabric Arts Trade Yahoo Group. They are wrapped in cellophane (ancient term!) envelopes and ready to mail.

Close to Water Again!

I spent my adolescent years on Orange Lake. This wonderful Lake in the Hudson Valley offered water-skiing, sailing, swimming, ice skating, and even ice boating. I have many dear memories of parties in the cove, ice skating at night and the deep sounds of ice shifting. Our children grew-up on a rippling trout-feed stream off our patio. We tubed the rapids and even had a rope swinging from a large oak to jump into the deep waters. Twin Lakes offered our children through their teen years a wonderful place to swim and learn about the nature that surrounds of a country lake. It was fun to row close to shore and watch the frogs leap into the water. What a grand chorus in the dark! They enjoyed fishing and the geese that landed every spring! Our time in Savannah offered a marvelous apartment over-looking the Savannah River. BIG vessels would arrive in port every few hours with their cargo from foreign countries. What a breath-taking site to see the ships go past our second-floor home.

The desert has been our home for near 15 years. Albuquerque was very barren. An hours drive provided flowing waters and opportunities to wade in the depths of the river. We now live in Boulder City. We moved from our motor home to an awesome house that over-looks Lake Mead! Water again.

I am posting pictures of our home for the many friends and relatives that live on the East Coast. I miss them so much, but for a year we have decided to be here. Don drove a 26 foot Penski truck AND pulled 16 foot U-Haul trailer of all our processions that had been in storage for nearly two years. We are still recovering form the ordeal even though we hired helpers in Albuquerque. We have spent the past month unpacking with approximately 30 more boxes left. I am thrilled with all my (over 50 boxes) art supplies that were stored. To touch and feel the energy of so many art pieces shared from so many of you. I will treasure them and not pack them away ever!!

Our back windows! We constantly view God's glory. There are mountains on the right and left of our home with the Lake in the center. So meditative. I have my blue chair in the loft that faces the water. It is a wonderful area to

meditate. Early morning is my fondest time to look at this majestic image and read from a selection of books I keep near. I have many treasures in my Mother's bookcase. A sacred space.

Looking over our loft is our living room. Don is proud of his framed T-Shirt! Don participated as a volunteer in the 1996 Summer Olympics. The yachting events were held off Tybee near Savannah. He won the Hane's promotional T-shirts for the count-down to the event. He won the auction on his birthday! Here is the incomplete dining room. I show this as an appreciation to have our family harvest table with us again. The open windows provide lots of light for me to sew .

One more picture to share: I am thrilled to have a bathtub! After near two years in our beautiful motor home with only a shower it is a DELIGHT!

We are blessed to have such a beautiful home for this year. We do miss our family, grandchildren, and friends back East. We have plans to return to the East Coast. Time, health, and finances will influence our decisions when. We are grateful for this opportunity to explore our possessions and simplify our life. We have collected so many treasures through our years. It is time to share and disperse our life collections.

Raku Pottery

It was a weekend of earth, fire, and water! I participated in a yearly event in Boulder City - a Raku Pottery Gathering. Raku ceramic pottery is a Japanese technique used since the 16 th century.

This process involves the drawing of red hot glazed clay pieces from a kiln, the subsequent smoking of the glazed clay pieces in a sealed container of burning paper (saw dust, dried pine needles), and the tense excitement as the final results emerged from the wheel barrel of cool water!

My friend Jan has selected a glaze (liquid latex) for her clay piece. She has added several different glazes to accent the clay pottery design.After the glaze dries, it is placed in the kiln. This particular kiln was designed and constructed by a team from Parumph, Nevada. They visit Boulder City for this annual event. After the temperature reaches near 1800 degrees ( 20 minutes) the pieces are removed.

It is the passage from the fire to air which determines the type, quantity and size of the cracks and the tone of the colours. This firing technique is harsh and some of the pieces break when they are taken out of the oven. We had a very experienced team a very experienced team, a nd only 10% of the pieces broke.

They are red hot and long tongs are used to carefully submerge each piece into a sealed tin container lined with smooth paper. As each piece is carefully placed into the container more paper is added to surround the hot clay pieces. A layer of paper is placed on top and the cover tightly placed over the smoking container.

The paper catches fire and creates lots of carbon. This is called a reduction process. The oxygen is replaced by the carbon. The temperature change continues the the cracked patterns which become filled with the black smoke. The reduction is what creates the unpredictable and beautiful fluxuations of color in the pottery. This step took approximately 15 minutes. Their shirts read, "Raku Pyromaniacs!"

The final step is the removal of the pieces from the tin containers, to submerge them in cool water to set the design

Raku means "happiness by chance."

We were...so excited to view are completed art pieces! The entire process influenced the final design and color: the position in the kiln, the placement in the tin container, the amount of fire near the piece, the length of time exposed to the cool air. We were eager to see our pieces lifted out of the cool water!

Cleaning our clay pieces removed the loose carbon and revealed the brilliant colors and designs.

My completed Raku Pottery! I will add beads, charms, and perhaps feathers for a final accent.

Tea Charms

I purchased these beautiful tea pieces from an area Antique Store. They were tarnished and linked on a thin chain. I removed each one and polished it. It was a delight to embellish each "tea charm" with a variety of rhinestones, swarovski crystals, and charms. I wear them individually or a few together. Lots of curiosity and compliments. I have also enjoyed creating a variety of Tea Fabric Poastcards. The month of June there will be a WORLD TEA EXPO. I have been asked to prepare a selection of fabric tea postcards for the cover of a local newspaper, "The CountryRegister." (www.countryregister.com)

Here a few I have completed. There is a great selection of Tea Fabric prints in my local quilt stores. I have add different machine embroidery patterns and vintage buttons. I am also making matching of matching bookmarks.

Comfort Dolls

Pat Winters is accomplishing such a kind and caring project. She collects small dolls made by artists throughout the country. She distributes them 12 at a time to various organizations. I initially made a comfort doll, and I am now committed! I have constructed 3 more free-form, comfort dolls that will be mailed tomorrow.

I so enjoy working with the wonderful fabric prints. It is fun to individualize each doll with a variety of embellishments. I infuse each comfort doll with love and insert a prayer within each before I hand-stitch the fabric closed. I usually cover each seam with vintage lace.

I am honored to participate in a Postcard
and ATC Exchange with Susan Lenz, a fiber and mixed media artist in South Carolina. Susan has organized, created , and developed CYBER FYBER EXHIBITION, an international event scheduled for January 2009 at the Vista Studios, Gallery 8080 in Columbia, South Carolina.

She made 130 fiber art ATC (Altered Trading Cards) and 163 fiber art postcards. Artist from all over the world are making a trade for one of her art pieces. Her work is beautiful.

One Fat Quarter!

There is a wonderful quilt shop in Las Vegas on E. Colorado named, "Teacup Quilts." I purchased a fabulous printed fabric with kittens, lemons, and teapots. I made five fabric postcards from one fat quarter.

Fabric Postcards

Currently I am hosting a Fabric Postcard Swap in the Yahoo Group Fabric Arts Trade (F.A.T.). The title of the swap is, Lace, Tea, and Roses. The participants can submit images reflecting victorian, romantic, retro, or modern with the inclusion of all three elements. This creative endevour is very enjoyable. The finished fabric postcards are so attractive. I enjoy designing postcards for family and friends for specific occassions. The following are dimensional fabic postcards. I sent these to a friend that recently completed her first handmade quilt.

The "Sewing Ladies" are quilted and present a nice raised image.

I received this lovely fabric Valentine poscard from a friend that also belongs to the F.A.T. Yahoo Group.

I will post in a few days five gorgeous postcards with a fabric design of tea pots, lemons, and kittens.

Comfort Dolls

Comfort dolls, also called healing/spirit dolls, have become my latest art challenge. I have just completed , "Dear One." My Universe Doll- The banner reads, " The Universe Totally Supports Us in Every Thought. We Choose to Think and Believe." Dressed in lavender with stars, moons, blond curls and a flowered hat she is eager to be packed with her diary. She is ready to take her journey. She is so excited about meeting her friends in Vermont. Lore C. (14 Secrets-listed) is hosting this wonderful Swap. She will assign the dolls to the awaiting artists. I am so sad to send her on this trip, but I know she is meant to be with someone else. The photo shows "Dear One," with a creative healing doll I recently received. Isn't she a doll to hug! I am so excited to have her visit with me. It makes it easier to send "Dear One" on her journey.

I made some additional comfort dolls, a Valentines Doll for my dear Aunt Rose, a Tea Doll for sweet Lore for hosting this Swap, and another purple darling for the "Comfort Doll Project" (listed). The pattern is from Carmen of the (F.A.T.) Fabric Arts Trade Yahoo Group. It is so unique.

I have infused each one with healing energy; the stitching was entwined with love, and they are filled with comforting bright light. I am eager to send them on their way.

Lifes Entertainments

Last night I had another Jan (Janet revelation). We are currently livin in sunny Boulder City in our RV. There is a Jan across he street from us. Last week a Jan moved in behind us! Counting 6! Silly fun how life entertains us.

The Many of Us - Sychronicitry of the Universe

An incident occurred yesterday that really has me perplexed! I was at the local hospital for some x-rays. I had to call the physician's office to talk to the billing office. I was to ask for "Janet." As the telephone was ringing a woman and her elderly mother walked into the waiting room. They asked the receptionist to talk with Janet!! There was a triangle of Janets.

I left the hospital and stopped by the physician's office. As I was standing at the receptionist's desk, the nurse came out with a chart and called out for "Janet." The fourth time!

This was all in 15 minutes. When I left the doctor's office, I drove to a see a friend that owns an antique store on the main street in Boulder City. She was not there but at home working on the monthly newspaper she writes.

The night before I woke around 2AM, and created an article she asked for about the near 200 charms I have hand-crafted for dear Amber's D.'s Internaltional Artistic Charm Exchange. It was coincidental that my friend was developing the paper the following day! We never discussed a deadline.

This photo is not to identify the acutul charms but to begin to give you a perspective of the vast number of these mini-art pieces that have been shared in this awesome Yahoo Group.

The sychronicitry continues. While I was chatting with the antique shop co-owner a elderly gentleman wanted to ask a question, I turned to see a "New York" baseball hat on this man's head. "Where in New York do you live?" His wife, hearing my inquiry, came scurring down the aisle, "We are from Newburgh."

I was born, rasied and gratuatd from Newburgh Free Academy three years after she!!! We enjoyed some laughter and discussion. What a day!

To meet a couple 3000 miles across the country from where you were born, raised, educated...we deducted, that I very well might have been the nurse in the OBGYN Unit when their first son was born!

Perplexed, very pensive, and maybe problematic or is it a potential! When do we meet the others of ourselves? Maybe daily!

I laugh and just embrace the beauty each day offers!

Expressions Through Art

I continue to participate in most of the Swaps posted on International Artistic Charm Exchange by Amber D. Currently, I am submitting pendants designed with optometric lenses.

This photo shows eight of the completed lenses. I used a new technique for four of the designs. I placed a transparent image over a selected picture. This technique offers an artist a way to develop a visual withmore depth and expression. An entire story can be told with this layering process.

My favorite lens is named "Eternity." The base photo is a vintage image of mothers and daughters. The cover, transparency, is a silhouette of a runner with a flag with the word eternity.

Another fun lens is named, "Sparkling Visions."

The focal and fun part of this pendant is the cluster of Swarovski Crystal stones. I am a member of Artella. There I offer a selection of unique, one-of-a-kind optical lens pendants. I just sold a necklace today! Do visit the Shoppe.

Medical Insurance!

My dear friend's surgery has been delayed! The physician requested an additional test before surgery. Her insurance company refused to cover the procedure. The doctor appealed, and she is awaiting the outcome. This certainly increases the anxiety levels before a major surgery! I am very concerned about the continued changes and conflicts in our health system.

Your prayers are very appreciated.

Friends

There is a very special friend in New York, thousands of miles away. She is under-going a serious procedure in the morning. I am requesting prayers from each of you that reads this. Is is very difficult to endure the emotional concern at such a distance. This is one of the important reasons that we are relocating back to our "Home." I miss her.

This a fabric postcard I created for my Granddaughter, Alyssa (age 9). I purchased a Babylock sewing machine in October. I have so enjoyed designing fabric postcards. Selecting the pattern and embellishing with lace, ribbon, flowers, buttons, found objects; incorporating a quote, poem, or personal statemnt; and capturing it all with a selection of decorative stitches. A personal expression to treasure!

A "Cozets" Day

It was an awesome day! I am currently reading, Eat, Pray, Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert. I was able to get "cozets" today and indulge in medative reading. The author is on a journey to three countries, Italy, India, and Indonesia. A radical venture for a 30 year old woman...traveling alone to each country to discover their treasures and secrets. I will comment more as my reading takes me deeper into her experiences.

I am also taking an e-course, Discovering the Shaman Healer Within: Apprentice Course by Shaman Elder Maggie Jean Wahls. This was a gift from a very perceptive friend. Today the second lesson arrived, Planting The Roots: Grounding Yourself. I will savour its contents in the next few days. The first lesson, Journey To Your Inner Self, revealed that we have five inner senses? They are: 1. Inner Vision 2. Resonance 3. Instinct 4. Discrimination and 5. Empathy.

This was not only new information, but this knowledge offered a pensive challenge. Have I optimized and developed my inner senses. I am eager to explore these concepts as the Course continues.

ARTASTICS - THREADS

Life's Journey is a mural of Threads.

The threads of my mural are influenced by my spiritual practices, personal values, the love of friends, and special people that have been my guides. They are strengthened by my husband's love and support. The colors are brilliant with the influence of my enthusiasm for continued exploration for meaning and truth.

My threads will continue to weave their unique patterns as I explore life's roads, paths, alleys, and avenues. My beliefs will provide many hues as I continue search for a personal meaning of my existence. Artistic challenges and accomplishments will add the sparkle!

The colors radiate the pulse of my life. There is a rhythm to the design. I have danced, whirled and twirled, even stumbled, but, I do have style!
